CIVIC leaders have given their reactions to a fire that ripped through a Romsey landmark.
King John's House suffered a fire in the early hours of Sunday, February 23, which left it with 'significant damage' as fire crews struggled to put it out.
Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Cllr Phil North, said: "It’s a crying shame that the historic and much-loved King John’s House has been damaged by fire.
"I’m only glad that the building was empty at the time and no one was injured.

"Our fire colleagues will be investigating to understand the cause of the fire, and we will be supporting the museum as they begin work to repair and recover."
Caroline Nokes, the MP for Romsey and Southampton North, said: "Devastating news about King John's House in Romsey - a fire has caused significant damage, predominantly inside, but has also melted the leaded lights and windows on the exterior.
"This historic building is such an important part of our local heritage, and it is deeply upsetting to see it affected in this way. Test Valley Borough Council is already on-site assessing the situation and working to make the building watertight ahead of the incoming weather.
"Hoping for a full assessment soon so we can understand the extent of the damage and what can be done to protect and restore this important landmark.
"Thank you to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service who worked through the night and are still on scene now.
"Their quick reaction and diligence has clearly meant much of the fabric of the building was saved."
Leader of Hampshire County Council, Nick Adams-King, said: "Absolutely awful news that there has been a fire at King John's House in Romsey overnight.
"There has been significant damage to the interior, the exterior and structure are being assessed at the moment. TVBC teams will be doing all they can to make the property secure and as watertight as possible ahead of the rain forecast later today and overnight.
"A tragedy for Romsey and most importantly for the trustees who have worked so hard to create a sustainable attraction, foremost amongst whom being Cllr John Parker, with whom my thoughts are this morning.
"A terrible thing to occur just as the Trust was taking over the Visitor Information Centre to enhance the offer of the attraction."
Writing on its website, the museum said: "We regret to inform you that King John’s House will be closed until further notice due to a serious fire on site which happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.
"Thankfully, no one was injured and the building was empty at that time, but we need time to assess and repair the damage.
"We appreciate your understanding and support during this challenging time, as well as the many messages of concern that we have received from the local community.
"Thank you for your continued loyalty."
