JOACHIM Kayi Sanda and Cam Bragg scored in extra time to ensure Saints progressed in the Premier League 2 play-offs with a 5-3 win over Leicester City.

Southampton, leading by three goals, had been cruising through to the quarter-finals until Leicester hit three late goals inside five minutes to send the game into extra time.

Kayi Sanda restored their lead early in extra time with his second St Mary's goal before Bragg converted from the spot to add a fifth.

The under-21s will take confidence from their response in extra time, and now await to discover the winner of Fulham and Nottingham Forest's round of 16 tie tomorrow.

Nico Lawrence, who has been on loan at MK Dons, returned in defence, while Jay Robinson also returned to under-21s football, and under-18 Nick Oyekunle won a spot on the bench.

Leicester's team included Jeremy Monga, 15, who became the second youngest player in Premier League history earlier this month when he came on against Newcastle.

Southampton were dominant from the first whistle and saw an early penalty appeal turned away, but that decision was soon forgotten when Merry scored a solo goal.

The 19 year old tucked the ball into the bottom corner after running from the halfway line, and Leicester were denied an instant response by Josh McNamara.

The goalkeeper saved Monga's near-post effort with his foot, sending the ball across the face of goal.

Fortune fell for McNamara again when he watched a long-range effort bounce wide after handing possession to the Foxes while 30 yards away from his vacant goal.

Southampton had plenty of chances to double their advantage while Monga remained Leicester's biggest threat.

Southampton finally made their pressure count just before the break, thanks to Robinson doubling their lead from a well-worked free-kick.

Bragg's smart delivery was headed into Robinson's path by Princewill Ehibhatiomhan, giving the recent senior debutant an easy finish.

Saints continued to dominate after the restart and Ehibhatiomhan added a third from the penalty spot just past the hour mark.

That was not enough to stop a sensational recovery from Leicester, who scored three goals inside five minutes to send the game into extra time.

Sammy Braybrooke scored directly from a free-kick before Henry Cartwright converted a penalty two and Jake Evans rolled past McNamara.

Southampton responded quickly after the restart as Kayi Sanda headed home, and their captain, Bragg, sealed things with a late penalty, won again by Derrick Abu.
