JORDAN Hugill scored a stunning second-half volley to earn Rotherham a point on a frustrating Saturday afternoon for Saints in the Championship.
Stuart Armstrong had given the home side the lead after just two minutes when he reacted quickest in the box but Hugill struck against the run of play with 16 minutes remaining.
The start of the second half was delayed due to a medical incident in the crowd. The person involved had CPR after collapsing on the stairs and was then taken away on a stretcher.
Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson and the St Mary's crowd alerted the referee to the worrying situation with everyone hoping the unfortunate supporter is okay.
Che Adams was the sole change to the starting line-up from the side that won 1-0 at Stoke City on Tuesday evening.
Charly Alcaraz, fresh from being called up to the Argentina national team and signing a new contract, was the player who made way.
Saints took the lead after just two minutes when Walker-Peters' cross was headed against the post by Adams before S Armstrong was on hand to put in the rebound.
It was the second home game in a row that the hosts had scored in the opening couple of minutes. Only a fine save by Johansson denied Russell Martin's side from making it 2-0 moments later.
Kamaldeen had cut in from the left before arrowing a shot towards the top corner but the Swedish goalkeeper tipped it over the bar.
Saints had the ball in the net for a second time when A Armstrong's clever flick found the bottom corner but the assistant referee had flagged for offside.
Johansson was doing everything he could to keep Rotherham in the game and he was again called into action when Adams sent a header goalbound but he made another terrific stop.
The visitors were fortunate to make it to half time only a goal down and knew they would have to improve considerably to get something out of the game.
Southampton continued to dominate possession at the start of the second half as it looked like the game would continue similarly to the first.
Rotherham had tightened up defensively since the break with Saints struggling to create as many chances.
With 20 minutes remaining, Saints created their first big chance of the half when substitute Ryan Fraser's cutback found Will Smallbone who was denied by an excellent save by Johansson.
But against the run of play, Hugill struck a superb volley over Bazunu from just outside the box to stun St Mary's.
It had been one of the few attacks from the visitors throughout the game and the goal seemed to give Rotherham added confidence.
Sensing a surprise win, Rathbone's deflected strike almost crept inside Bazunu's near post but the Irish goalkeeper did well to push it behind.
Southampton tried to notch a winner with Alcaraz and Bednarek going close but it was not to be.
