Tottonians put in one of their best performances of season as they aim to take a winning run through to the end of the year.
The club’s first XV returned from Chobham with a 31-23 victory to cement their sixth place in London 1 South and move right on to the shoulders of this weekend’s opponents London Cornish.
Head coach Gavin Hart said: “We are beginning to build up a bit of momentum now and the lulls that have been happening did not happen on Saturday.”
Totts replied to an early Chobham penalty when centre Mike Searle sprinted over in the corner following a break from Robbie Searle and winger Ian Davidson.
Chobham replied with their second penalty but back came Totts with their second try - this time stand-in captain Richard Buck made the break, Mike Searle broke through a couple of tackles and back row Nick Jones finished off. Robbie Searle converted.
With Totts’ scrum half, Ben Dolbear, out of the game being treated for an injury, Chobham’s number eight cut back against the drift and scored a converted try under the posts as his side moved to 13-12 ahead.
Tottonians went into the break with the upper hand - Buck zipping over the line and Searle again converting.
Chobham regained their point advantage shortly after the interval with a try under the posts.
However Buck chalked up his second try and Totts’ bonus point when he darted between the home side’s centre and winger.
The Surrey club added another three points to their tally with a long-range penalty before Totts mounted a long period of sustained pressure. Mike Searle picked up from the back of a ruck and was helped over the line for his second try.
Totts kept Chobham at bay in the final stages of the game, despite losing Joe Searle who was yellow carded with just three minutes to go for hands in at the ruck.
Hart said: “Craig Durnin in our second row had a fantastic game and Liam Hurst at prop did a great job, after he started the year in the threes. He is doing really, really well. And I thought Richard Buck had an outstanding game.
“As a team performance I thought that was our best game of the season so far. We still have yet to give that flawless performance and gave away a lot of penalties in the first half.”
Tottonians have the chance to leapfrog opponents London Cornish at Water Lane on Saturday.
“Cornish have had a few slip-ups recently and have struggled a bit like us with unavailability and I think that may go in our favour,” added Hart.
“But I think we should go into this week very confident. We’ll see what happens on the day but certainly from our side we feel we are heading in the right direction and building towards something.
