SAINTS academy legend Theo Walcott has paid tribute to Malcolm Elias, the club's former academy chief who passed away at 71.

Elias, 71, worked at Saints from 2000 until 2006 and worked with a wealth of homegrown talent, which also included Gareth Bale and Adam Lallana.

He enjoyed a successful spell at the club alongside colleagues Huw Jennings and Steve Wigley, and was still working as Fulham's head of academy recruitment.

On social media site X, Southampton FC posted: "We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Malcolm Elias.

"One of the influential figures in the club’s youth development history, our thoughts go out to all of Malcolm’s family, friends and colleagues at this time.”

Saints graduate Walcott, who made 397 Premier League appearances and received 47 caps for England, posted on Instagram: "RIP Malcolm Elias.

"I’m heartbroken to hear of the passing of Malcolm Elias. He was the scout who gave me my first real opportunity in football — the one who saw something in me before the world did.

"Malcolm believed in me at the very start of my journey, and for that, I’ll always be grateful. His eye for talent was unmatched, but more than that, he had a genuine passion for helping young players chase their dreams.

"Without his belief and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Thank you, Malcolm, for everything. Your impact on my life and career will never be forgotten. Rest in peace."

Several clubs joined the tributes paid to Elias, including Liverpool FC, after his role in the development of England star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Premier League champions said: "Liverpool FC is saddened by the passing of Malcolm Elias following a short illness.

"A respected talent-spotter throughout the game in this country, Elias was the club's Academy head of recruitment after joining the Reds from Southampton in 2007.

"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with Malcolm's loved ones at this sad time."
