FORMER Saints boss Russell Martin has predictably been linked with interest to Flynn Downes but the reported valuation is wrong.

Martin penned a three-year deal at Rangers this week and is said to be keen on raiding his old side for trusty midfielder Downes.

Downes played under Martin at Swansea before following him to St Mary's, initially on loan in 2023 before making an £18million move last year.

The 26 year old was integral to the club's promotion last time out in the Championship, but was unable to stave off relegation again last season.

Former Ipswich Town and West Ham man Downes has made 66 appearances for Saints over two campaigns, captaining the team four times.

The Sun report that new Rangers boss Martin wants to take Downes with him to Ibrox, but could be priced out of making that transfer.

Their report adds that Saints value Downes, who they describe as a "classy playmaker", at £10m - nearly half of what they paid 12 months ago.

Needless to say, Saints would not be willing to part ways with Downes, who signed a four-year deal until 2028 last year, at such a low price.

To add, Rangers have only signed a player for more than £10million once in their history - Tore Andre Flo, from Chelsea - and not for 25 years.

Downes was left out of the Saints squad by former manager Ivan Juric following the interest from Ipswich in the January transfer window.

Saints were confident that they would keep Downes, though Juric confessed he pushed for the move and criticised the player's attitude.

Downes returned to the team at the end of February, and then played every minute of the final six matches under interim boss Simon Rusk.
