INTERIM boss Simon Rusk has challenged Saints under-21s to perform in games with "real meaning" ahead of their Premier League 2 play-off against Leicester.

Saints are targeting two pieces of silverware and will face Brentford B in a Premier League Cup semi-final days after hosting the Foxes at St Mary's.

Rusk, who started the campaign as under-21s boss, has been cautious not to draw too many academy players into training this week.

Star man Jay Robinson was named on the bench against Fulham but did not enter the pitch, potentially allowing him to play in Sunday's play-off.

"We are in constant dialogue around what is going on with the teams," an excited Rusk told the Daily Echo

"With my background, it is something that is really important to me as well. It has been a really strong end to the season.

"That is great for us. As much positivity as possible is helpful for us, and they are playing their part in that.

"We want to test our players in high-pressure games. This is a great chance for them to go and perform in games with real meaning."

Tickets are still available for the match, which kicks off at 2pm on Sunday, April 27, as Calum McFarlane's side target progression to the last eight.

The winners of the meeting between Saints and Leicester are expected to take on the winner of Fulham vs Nottingham Forest in the quarter-final.
