HAMPSHIRE Hawks have secured the signing of South African batting sensation Dewald Brevis for the entirety of the 2025 men’s T20 Blast.
The 21 year old, widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket, also has the option to feature in red-ball cricket in the County Championship.
Brevis first made headlines during the 2022 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup, where he amassed an astonishing 506 runs, including two centuries and three fifties in six innings.
His performances earned him global recognition, leading to stints with several top T20 franchises, including Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI New York in Major League Cricket, and MI Cape Town in the SA20. He has also played in the Caribbean Premier League, Abu Dhabi T10, and various other tournaments worldwide.
Expressing his excitement about joining Hampshire, Brevis said: “I’m hugely excited about joining Hampshire Hawks for the Vitality Blast this summer. The team has a great history in the competition, and I look forward to being a part of that.
“It’s great that we have Lhuan-dre (Pretorius) with us as well, and hopefully we can put on a good show and entertain the crowd at the Utilita Bowl on our way to reaching Finals Day and lifting the trophy.
“I’m also looking forward to playing in the County Championship. The team was so close last year, and I hope I can help the club push for the title in 2025.”
Brevis has already built an impressive T20 record, scoring 1,787 runs in 81 matches at an average of 26.27 and an explosive strike rate of 144.93.
His most memorable knock came in October 2022, when he smashed 162 off just 57 balls in the CSA T20 Challenge. In this year’s SA20, he continued his fine form, finishing as MI Cape Town’s second-highest run-scorer with 291 runs at a strike rate of 184.
Alongside his white-ball exploits, Brevis has proven himself in First-Class cricket, scoring over 1,000 runs in 17 matches, including three centuries and five half-centuries.
Hampshire’s director of cricket, Giles White added: “Dewald is an exceptional young player who will add firepower to our batting lineup this summer.
“He will arrive having enjoyed good recent form, and alongside Lhuan-dre Pretorius, we will have two young cricketers hungry to make their mark.”
Hampshire Hawks kick off their men’s Vitality Blast campaign with a double-header at the Utilita Bowl on Friday, May 30, against Essex.
Three further men’s and women’s double-headers will take place on June 17, July 6, and July 13, promising an exciting summer of cricket for Hampshire fans.
