ENGLAND under-21 boss Lee Carsley admitted Taylor Harwood-Bellis "seemed okay" as he played down the seriousness of his injury.

Harwood-Bellis suffered an injury in the second-half on Friday night and, despite trying to play on, was replaced by Charlie Cresswell.

The 23 year old, who has recently come back from injury, returned to Saints for further assessment and missed his side's 4-2 win over Portugal.

However, asked after the match, Carsley said: “Taylor’s been sent back to the club, he’ll get a scan on his thigh. It seemed okay yesterday.

"We’ve said in the past we’ll never take any chances with the players. As soon as there’s an issue they go back to the club. So we’ll get a bit more information maybe tomorrow.”

Under-21s captain Harwood-Bellis could feature in Southampton's Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, April 2.

Carsley will next see his England side in action at the European Under-21 Championship this summer and thinks there is plenty to be excited about.

England will go into the summer’s tournament with a real chance of retaining their crown but Carsley knows the competition is also just as tough.

He said: “I think we’ve got a really good chance regardless of the squad we take.

“We’ve got some outstanding talent but we forget Spain are quite good as well, Italy are good and Portugal are good and we have to be respectful of that.”

“We won’t play a game before we go out to the tournament so it was important that we tried to get something out of this window."
