FORMER player turned Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has issued Saints a warning about the lasting effects of their "awful" recruitment.

Goodman, 58, made 122 appearances for Wolves during his playing career and has become a popular Football League commentator in retirement.

He has warned Saints that they will be "under pressure" again in the upcoming summer window as they look to rebuild for the Championship.

The St Mary's side are 17 points adrift of safety in the Premier League and with nine matches to play, they could be relegated next month.

Speaking to Football League World, Goodman said: "I think the same thing applies to Southampton that applies to Leicester and Ipswich.

"I think all three teams are likely to go down, and I don’t think their recruitment has worked out as well as they would have hoped.

"In the summer and January window, Southampton recruited 20 players, and when you look at it, it is only really Mateus Fernandes and arguably Aaron Ramsdale that have been anywhere near a success.

"Their recruitment was awful, it was all wrong, and I think that is going to put them under pressure again in the summer."

Southampton FC's company accounts for the 2023/24 financial year - a Championship season - are set to be published by the end of the month.

Having posted losses in five consecutive years, this year's accounts could reflect more positively due to massive profits in player trading.
