MANAGER Kelvin Davis criticises his player's "mentality" after they threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Wealdstone on Saturday.

Alex Reid scored a second-half double as Wealdstone came from three down at half-time to grab a remarkable 3-3 draw in a National League thriller against Eastleigh.

The visitors appeared to be cruising after a close-range double from centre-back Ludwig Francillette and a delicate chip from Tyrese Shade put them in complete control.

But the relegation-battling hosts refused to lie down, Tyler Walker pulling one back before Reid’s brace – a penalty and the all-important leveller in the 87th minute – secured a stirring comeback.

"We didn't let them breathe in the first half. We were intense in the first half, it was a really high-level performance but the second half was the complete opposite," said Davis.

"We didn't set them tone in the first minute of the second half, which allowed them to get into the game, and it snowballed from there.

"It's disappointing because we went from a performance that looked beyond the level to one that looked below the level."

Asked why his team fell apart in the second half, Davis said: "It's down to mentality. You're 3-0 and you think you've won the game. That's it.

"That is the mood you true to avoid at half-time, wherever you manage, whatever level you are at. You know the telltale signs, the feeling at half-time.

"If you come out with the non-engaged mentality, teams will find a way and punish you. You will get what you deserve.

"We didn't have a foothold in the game so we made four changes in the second half to try and get to grips with ourselves.

"I must say, even the equalising goal, looked very offside to me. Brindley got tripped on the outside of the box too when you watch that back. It's very disappointing but you get what you deserve."

Eastleigh were not awarded a penalty when Jai Semenyo, the brother of AFC Bournemouth and Ghana forward Antoine, went down inside the box.

"I don't think Jai is going down unless he feels contact," Davis continued. "He is inside the box, he's going to get a shot off.

"The referee is closer than me but I know Jai and I know he will be looking to get a shot on goal. The subs didn't change the momentum of the game.

"If I didn't make the changes, maybe we would have lost the game. I think it's a difficult thing to answer. We tried to make changes but it didn't happen.

"The one thing I will say in the team's defence is there is some fatigued boys out there. It has been a long couple of weeks of games.

"We asked for a big push today and we certainly got maximum effort in the first half. It was as if they felt they had done enough. The game is 90 minutes."
