SPITFIRES boss Kelvin Davis was delighted to keep a clean sheet in their 2-0 win over Aldershot at the Silverlake Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead in the Hampshire derby when Jesurun Uchegbulam beat his defender and played the ball to Jai Semenyo, brother of Bournemouth forward Antoine, who buried the finish.

Tyrese Shade doubled the lead before half-time with a clever strike that wrong-footed the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

The defeat left the visitors outside of the relegation zone by just a point while Eastleigh are eight points outside the play-off places.

"It was a really good performance on the back of a really strong performance last week as well," Davis explained.

"We didn't get the result that we deserved last week but we certainly did today. I'm pleased for Tyrese to get a goal on his return.

"Jai Semenyo scored his first goal for us and it was a fantastic goal. A big part of it started with a throw-in deep in our half.

"The energy in the transition and the quality on the ball was fantastic. To find ourselves in the box and to finish it the way we did, it was a great move."

Despite heading into the break with a strong lead against their local rivals, Davis admitted he wanted more from his players.

"At half-time, believe it or not, I wasn't overly pleased with the performance," he continued.

"I felt we were playing a little bit within ourselves. With the pace and the energy we have in this team, I didn't feel we were putting it on the pitch.

"The question was could we show them a little bit more of what we have got and what we are capable of.

"The second half was more of a challenge for us, although we did have two or three opportunities on goal."

Eastleigh have now kept eight clean sheets this season - the twelfth most in the division - something which has pleased former goalkeeper Davis.

"We spoke about it in the office a moment ago, it's a mentality thing. We have spoken about it for a long time and we have to stay on that," he concluded.

"We have to keep drilling that into the players. Clean sheets are where it all starts, that's where the groundwork is done.

"They are the foundation to win games. I'm pleased for the defensive side that we kept a clean sheet.

"I'm pleased for Joe (McDonnell), who was highlighted last week for the wrong reasons but that's being a goalkeeper.

"He showed composure today in some key moments that some people might not recognise, but I've got a keen eye on those things."
