HAMPSHIRE Cricket has announced the departure of Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Abbas, who will be returning to his homeland.

Abbas enjoyed a successful tenure at Utilita Bowl after joining in 2021 and has been instrumental in the team’s recent successes in the County Championship.

He has been a vital part of the team’s bowling attack, featuring in 47 first-class matches and taking 180 wickets at an average of just 19.26.

Giles White, Hampshire's director of cricket, said: "Mohammad has consistently been one of the top performers in the County Championship and has unfailingly produced his very best for Hampshire time and time again.

"His character will be sorely missed in the dressing room and on the pitch, and everyone at the club wishes him the very best in his career. Winning the County Championship remains a top priority for the club.

"With James Vince moving to a white ball contract and young fast bowlers at the club pushing for more first team cricket, we are exploring alternative overseas player options, which will give the squad more balance as we look to go one step further than last year.

A Hampshire statement added: "Everyone at Hampshire Cricket and Utilita Bowl wishes Mohammad Abbas all the best in his career, both domestic and international."

In his debut season, Abbas made an immediate impact, claiming 41 wickets in 10 matches at an impressive average of 15.87.

His standout performance came against Middlesex, where he achieved match figures of 9-39, including a six-wicket haul in the first innings.

Over his two-year stint, Abbas formed a formidable partnership with fellow seamers Kyle Abbott and Keith Barker.

The trio collectively took over 150 wickets in the 2022 County Championship, with Abbas contributing 50 wickets at an average of 17.62. His economy rate of 2.35 was the best among Hampshire’s bowlers that season.

The exit of Abbas leaves a significant void in Hampshire’s bowling lineup. As he departs, Hampshire fans will fondly remember Abbas for his consistency, skill, and match-winning spells. His impact on the club will not be forgotten.
