FORMER Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given questioned Joe Lumley's positioning for Aston Villa's winner, suggesting he made Jhon Duran's decision for him.

Lumley tried to race off his line to stop the Colombian forward after he pickpocketed Taylor Harwood-Bellis and shrugged off Nathan Wood.

The 29 year old did not reach the ball in time and was beaten by Duran's effort, which was lifted over him and into the vacant net.

Lumley had already had a nervy moment against Duran when he pushed the ball away from the Villa forward, avoiding a penalty.

Speaking on MOTD, Given said: “Looking at Joe Lumley’s positioning, he can maybe retreat and go back into the goal and give Duran a more difficult problem.

“Because he comes rushing out like that, it makes the decision up for the striker. He just has to miss the goalkeeper. It’s a great finish.

“Joe will look back at that and probably change his mind and want to have stayed back further in the goal.”

Lumley is deputising for the injured Aaron Ramsdale and Alex McCarthy having not played a league game for Saints prior to last month.

The former QPR man has since started three games and has conceded seven goals. Russell Martin is hopeful of having Ramsdale back for their game against Spurs this week.
