SPITFIRES boss Kelvin Davis insisted he was disappointed after they drew 0-0 with fellow promotion hopefuls York City on Saturday.

The retired goalkeeper felt his side could have taken all three points from the LNER Community Stadium.

Second-placed York almost snatched victory deep into stoppage time when Lenell John-Lewis headed over.

Ollie Pearce went close for the Minstermen, but Eastleigh also fashioned good opportunities to break the deadlock.

Chris Maguire was denied by York goalkeeper Harrison Male and Paul McCallum shanked wide from Jake Vokins’ cross.

Speaking to club media after the game, Davis said: "I thought we were good on the day, really well organised.

"We nullified their threats for most of the game and had some really good chances, certainly in the first half, to get a goal.

"Overall, we are slightly disappointed that we haven't come away with a win today. We allowed York to have the ball in their own half to a certain point.

"We are comfortable with that. We have a different profile of player at the top of the pitch and we are happy for them to come onto us.

"We tried to go on the counter but we were very unfortunate that it didn't work out in a way that allowed us to take three points.

"We were pleased. They are up near the top fo the league for a reason. Playing at home, they were probably expecting to take something from the game.

"It's a point that we will take down the road and be happy with the clean sheet. The underlying feeling is disappointment because it could have been more."

Spitfires shot-stopper Joe McDonnell reached his milestone 200th appearance on the day.

It brings him closer to the appearance record, currently held by Mike Green (234 games).

Asked about his goalkeeper, Davis added: "That's a stat I wasn't aware of. I'm really pleased for Joe. He's a massive player for the club.

"He will continue to be so. He's a fantastic goalkeeper. To get 200 appearances under your belt at any level (is impressive).

"He's rounded that off with a clean sheet so I'm sure he's happy. He didn't have too much to do today - it was a nice and easy clean sheet for him."

Eastleigh are next in action at the Silverlake Stadium against third-place Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, October 5.
