JAPAN and AZ Alkmaar full-back Yukinari Sugawara is reportedly set for a medical at Southampton ahead of completing a move to the south coast.

Sugawara has been the subject of interest from various clubs but has reportedly got his desired move to Saints.

Southampton are in the market for a right-back amid uncertainty around Kyle Walker-Peters' future.

Two-time England international Walker-Peters has entered the final 12 months of his contract on the south coast.

The Daily Echo have previously reported that Sugawara was high on the list of options.

Sugawara, 24, has made 198 appearances for AZ since joining the Eredivisie outfit in 2019 from Nagoya Grampus.

This past season saw him score four goals and notch seven assists in 30 league games as they finished fourth, 10 points above Ajax.

In addition to regular top-flight football, the 13-time Japanese international has made 36 appearances across the Europa League and Europa Conference League.

Sugawara will become the second Japanese player to agree to join Saints this summer should a deal be struck, following youth international Rento Takaoka, who will join in March 2025.

He would become the club's fourth Japanese player at senior level, joining Tadanari Lee, Maya Yoshida and Takumi Minamino.
