SAINTS top scorer Adam Armstrong believes Will Smallbone has been "incredible" under increased pressure as a fan of the club.

The Basingstoke-born midfielder and academy graduate has been key for boss Russell Martin, missing just three league games all campaign.

Smallbone suffered online abuse following the FA Cup defeat to Liverpool in February and deleted his social media accounts.

However, he has contributed goals against Hull City, West Brom and in both matches against Leeds United in the regular season.

His crucial opener against the Baggies in the playoff semi-final was his seventh of the campaign - and Armstrong can only hope for more.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Armstrong said: "He has been incredible. I think you've seen this season what he's done.

"It's never easy being a guy that's from the hometown, playing for his club. It comes with a lot of pressure.

"There's another element of pressure because you're essentially a fan of the club. You've grown up with it.

"I think Will's been unbelievable this year, he's chipped in with massive goals at massive times and had some incredible performances.

"They have helped us to get to where we are now. Let's hope he gets another goal on Sunday."

Armstrong, 27, netted the second and third goals to finish off West Brom last Friday, taking his total to an impressive 23.

Che Adams has hit 16 league strikes despite missing the two playoff matches while Ryan Fraser sits behind Smallbone and fourth for the club on six.
