EVERY word Southampton manager Russell Martin said ahead of the FA Cup fifth round clash with Liverpool at Anfield.
How is Ryan Fraser?
RM: He’s going to be out for a little bit of time, unfortunately.
It’s a bit of a blow for us, a big blow for him but we’ll have him back probably on the other side of the international break. Very soon after that hopefully, all being well.
Will he stay at the club during his time out?
RM: I don’t think he has any desire to go back and get treatment. He wants to be a part of it here and be around the dressing room. That would be our preference.
He is a really big character in the dressing room actually.
We lose something when he doesn’t play which is his relentless running ability, his ability to cross on the move, his desire to go and score or assist, and work hard for the team.
The other guys need to step up now. As always in football, there’s an opportunity for someone else when someone gets injured.
I’m really gutted for Wee Man because he’s been brilliant since he’s been here. His output data-wise will tell you that.
You don’t need to have a look at that to see what he has brought. I think everyone has enjoyed having him, but he will play a big part for us in the run-in for sure.
We just need to concentrate on getting him as fit as quickly as we possibly can.
What about this opportunity at Anfield, is there pressure?
RM: There’s always pressure. No-one will expect us to get anything outside of this building. I think the challenge for us is to be the team we want to be.
Now we’re going to Anfield which is an amazing place to play. They’ve just won a cup in Jurgen Klopp’s final season.
If you don’t get excited by all of that or embrace that challenge or look forward to it then you are probably in the wrong game.
I think it’s one we are all looking forward to and the challenge for us is to be the team we want to be.
To go there and be brave and be aggressive, we’ll see where it will take us.
We will have 5,000 fans there on a Wednesday night which is incredible so it will be a brilliant atmosphere I’m sure and it’s one we are all very much looking forward to.
Is it one you can enjoy matching up against Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool?
RM: I’m going to stand in the dugout next to one of the greatest managers we’ve seen in the Premier League.
I think he has been amazing for the Premier League and what he’s done not just with the play on the pitch but to bring a city together and to connect with the community like he has is incredible.
I look forward to that very much. We’ve enjoyed looking at the games to try and prepare with what’s going to help us.
It’s just a brilliant opportunity for us to go toe-to-toe there and see how far we’ve come and see how far we have to go as well, myself included.
I have so much respect for Jurgen Klopp. He and Pep Guardiola are the two best because they manage to remain themselves the whole time.
The level of authenticity at that level all the time, to remain true to yourself and what you believe in, and to walk that line and sometimes you overstep that line as a winner – I think is incredible.
I’m really looking forward to going up against him.
It has been a punishing schedule, how is the squad at the moment?
RM: Physically, they are fine. We worked so hard to claw ourselves back to a position we wanted to be in and it's changed, the energy, a little bit.
I think that is from everyone. We have to be conscious of that and we are in a position where we really have to hunt again.
We have to get back to what we were doing so well. I have made too many changes to the team so that is part of my learning and my fault.
When you are on that unbeaten run and making changes and the team is flowing it doesn't really matter too much.
After West Brom, I shouldn't have changed the team having put in a performance so brilliant - but I had a team in mind for Hull because of the way they play.
That's my fault but Millwall is a freak game. Bristol City and Hull for 45 minutes, we're talking about 135 minutes of football I have been unhappy with in nearly 30 games.
I would accept that over that length of time. The Millwall performance is not a bad one, we should have scored more goals and I am frustrated we don't.
We had the most final third entries of any team in the Championship in any game and we have to make more of that.
If Ryan Fraser and Adam Armstrong are playing, I am pretty sure we do. Other guys need to step up.
Not playing Adam Armstrong because I thought he needed a rest is my fault and he should have played - he nearly scores when he comes on.
I am learning from that and we are all learning all the time. I think the players are in a good place and the last few weeks have made us realise how important a few aspects of the game are.
I am pretty sure the lads will bring that on the pitch because when we have a small bump in the road, the players learn so well and believe so much in it.
That will get us through and it is a really exciting eight or nine weeks - but we need to get through this schedule until the international break.
We will get through it as best we can and we have an amazing multi-disciplinary team here, with strength and conditioning, sports science and we will use everyone.
