AFC Totton’s play-off hopes hang by a thread going into the last day of the season as fierce rivals Sholing FC spoiled the Easter Monday party with a 1-0 victory, writes Benjamin Rees.
It was a typical derby match with opportunities at a premium for both sides, as the first half ended goalless with both sides manufacturing half chances at best.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, although with more at stake for the hosts, their opponents were happy to sit back and frustrate. The only goal came late on, Dan Mason muscled his way onto a through ball which he slotted into the bottom corner.
The Stags seemingly had no answer, and Dave Diaper's Boatmen took home the win.
Jimmy Ball's Totton sit sixth in the table, one place and three points outside the play-off spots.
Goal difference is on their side, but they will now need to win at Slimbridge on Saturday and hope Bristol Manor Farm lose at home to fourth-placed Winchester City.
Sholing, who themselves were in play-off contention earlier this season, round off their campaign at home to Barnstaple Town, knowing whatever happens, they will finish seventh.
Also at 3pm on Saturday, 16th-placed Lymington Town host Frome Town, knowing victory could lift them four places.
