NEWCASTLE reportedly put £10m asking price on midfielder Sean Longstaff amid interest from Saints and other Premier League sides.

The 23-year-old’s Magpies contract expires next summer and the club risk losing him on a free transfer if he remains beyond this window.

The Newcastle-born lad can play anywhere across the central-midfield positions, with the ability to both defend and attack and would make good cover for Saints’ squad.

He has already played 55 times at Premier League level, scoring twice and registering two assists.

However, there has been no talk of him signing a new Newcastle contract and the Daily Mail report that clubs interested have been quoted £10m to take him away from manager Steve Bruce now.

The report goes on to say that Everton, managed by Rafa Benitez who gave Longstaff his senior debuts, are also interested in bringing the midfielder to Goodison Park, and that Ralph Hasenhuttl is more concerned with ensuring he gets a quality centre-back replacement first.

Although the hunt for a centre-back goes on and not all funds raised by the transfers of players such as Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard will definitely be used, it doesn't mean that nobody else will come in. 

Supporters will hope to see some added depth by deadline day on August 31. 

Longstaff made 22 and 23 appearances in the 2020-21 and 19-20 Premier League campaigns respectively, including a full ninety against Saints last season when his side fell to a 2-0 defeat at St Mary’s.
