Ralph Hasenhuttl is not trying to concern himself too much with Saints’ wretched home form this season because he is a desperate for a win wherever it comes.
The 2-1 defeat to Everton condemned Saints to their worst ever home league start to a campaign having taken just one point from six matches at St Mary’s this season.
The other seven points they have accumulated have all come on the road but they have failed to win a single match in their last seven attempts in the Premier League, last picking up three points in a 1-0 victory against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane two months ago.
For that reason, Hasenhuttl is trying not to just focus on form at St Mary’s.
He said: “I think it’s not a big topic that we didn’t win a game at home because the last games also away we didn’t win so we must take a good result. If it’s tight like against Man City and we still don’t get something then it means we are not good enough at the moment.
“Why we are not good enough is in the moment to find and I think we do a few things good but in a few things when we try this we are not good enough and that is the problem.”
The last defeat to Everton was a particularly disappointing affair.
Hasenhuttl said before the game that he hoped to see a reaction from his team not just after back-to-back losses to Manchester City but in the first game at St Mary’s following the 9-0 drubbing by Leicester.
Instead the first half display was woeful.
“The problem was that we concede a goal after four minutes from a set-piece and in that moment you know it’s going to be more difficult and it was not so long ago we conceded nine goals here, ok one man down,” he admitted.
“In that moment I think this was maybe the moment where the guys were a little bit frustrated and lost everything we spoke about and what we trained to do.”
There has inevitably been speculation over Hasenhuttl’s future given Saints’ recent problems but he retains the backing of the board.
The man himself is focussing on his team rather than himself.
“I don’t think about what I feel about this. In the moment I feel disappointed because we lost a game and that’s the only thing I feel and anything else is not interesting for me,” he reflected after the Everton defeat.
“I try to stay focused for when I come to my team to give them answers for what happens in the moment.”
