FOLLOWING their winning performances at the English Schools’ Track & Field Championships, discus duo Sam Callaway and Josh Douglas have struck gold again.
Their exploits at Birmingham earned them an England vest for the Schools’ Athletics Home International at Grangemouth, competing against the cream of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Despite some interesting logistics, with the pole vault competitions crossing over the front of the discus cage and causing some lengthy delays, the Southampton AC duo performed very well in tricky conditions to comfortably win gold.
Sam, a student at Hampshire Collegiate School in Romsey, threw 43.39 metres to secure an impressive winning margin of over four metres, while Josh, who attends Thornden School in Chandler’s Ford, propelled the discus 53.73m to dominate the boys’ event by five metres.
Sam and Josh are both currently ranked No1 in the UK in the under-17 age-group with bests of 45.04 and 55.83 respectively.
Together with training partners Anna Merritt and Josh Wise, the pair have been selected to take part in the National Schools’ Games taking place in Loughborough at the end of August.
Under-15 English Schools’ discus champion Rhys Allen of Hounsdown School, Totton, also had a very successful weekend nailing three wins and personal best performances in a National Youth Development League fixture.
Rhys, another member of the thriving throws group coached by former internationals Dave and Debbie Callaway in Southampton, is currently ranked second nationally in the U15 boys’ discus with a personal best of 44.39.
