The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has sent a warning to UK drivers.

Posting on X, it wrote: "Due to renew your driving licence? Do it online. It’s easy, quick and secure to renew on gov.uk."

If you're 70 or over, you need to renew it every 3 years.

Drivers will receive a reminder before their current license expires, directing them to the gov.uk website to complete the renewal.

It costs £14 when you apply online, and is applicable for those who have full driving licences, or a provisional license.

To renew your licence, you must:

  • be a resident of Great Britain
  • not be disqualified from driving

It's important to note that "if your name or title has changed since you got your current driving licence, you cannot renew it online," as stated on the government website.

Your new driving licence should arrive within a week if you do the application online.

You can also apply at the Post Office, which will cost £21.50.

It adds: "If you cannot use the online service, you can apply at a Post Office or by post."

Motorists warned

Motorists are being urged to report car modifications to the motoring body or risk severe fines.

Three modifications, such as lowering suspension, adding large spoilers, and tinting windows, can result in up to a combined £5,060 in fines and nine licence points.

Illegal suspension can risk a £2,500 financial penalty and three penalty points, while spoiler amendments can also mean motorists are fined £2,500 with three points too.
