Easter sees lots of food-related products released for the season in supermarkets around the UK.

Usually, this will come in the form of various chocolate and sweets but a more unique offering you might not be aware of is the Hot Cross Bun burger.

Released by HECK!, the Yorkshire-based sausage and burger maker, the item offers a different spin on the food.

It involves a pork burger being seasoned with mixed spice, cinnamon, ginger and raisins to evoke some of the usual stylings of a hot cross bun.

Speaking on the creation, Calum Smith, a development chef at HECK! said: “We explored the idea of putting a regular burger in a hot cross bun and then thought, why not put the flavours into the burger itself.

"The sweetness and spice enhance the savoury richness of the meat, creating the ideal flavour balance.

"Whether you choose to go the whole hog and nestle this one in between two halves of a freshly baked hot cross bun is entirely up to you!”

Upon hearing about the existence of this rather strange-sounding item I was curious to see what it was like.

The Hot Cross Bun burgers are available to purchase at the HECK! website throughout April but I was able to have some sent over early to try.

I tried a Hot Cross Bun burger and it was a strange experience

After getting the burgers out of the packaging they were easy enough to cook, and fairly quick too at 15 minutes on the griddle.

What was apparent from the aroma while they were cooking was how sweet it was, as you could really get the cinnamon and ginger in the air.

Once they were cooked I assembled them on some brioche buns with some lettuce and tucked in.

As you can guess the flavour of the meat was incredibly sweet but combined with the savoury and salty pork it actually made a decent combination.

I was honestly quite surprised considering the seemingly opposing nature of the ingredients but it did work quite well.

After giving it a try, a family member pointed out the taste was similar in nature to pork and apple sausages, which is something I have enjoyed in the past.

Overall, the burgers were a lot more enjoyable in practice than I had imagined them in theory.

They certainly aren't going to be for everyone's tastes due to their sweetness, but if that's not too much of an issue for you I would recommend them.

If the aim was to truly evoke the taste and smell of a regular hot cross bun then HECK! managed to succeed.

Admittedly, it's not something I can imagine going out of my way to buy, but if you spot it in your local supermarket you may surprise yourself by enjoying it.
