With so many national holidays in the calendar and 2025 being off to a flying start, you might be wondering when Mother’s Day is this year.
The annual day celebrates mothers and motherly figures in our lives and gives us an opportunity to shower them in love and give them the gifts they deserve.
While Mother’s Day is in March again this year, it’s slightly later so you’ve got a bit more time to get yourself prepared for the big day.

When is Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day is celebrated in spring and always lands on a Sunday as it’s also known as Mothering Sunday.
The annual day is a time to share appreciation for your loved ones and you can mark it however you’d like, whether that’s enjoying an afternoon tea with your mum or doing her favourite hobby together.
In 2025, Mother’s Day will take place on Sunday, March 30.
Where did Mother’s Day come from?
Mother’s Day has been celebrated for a long time with the BBC reporting that it started “during the Middle Ages”.
The broadcaster explained: “During the Middle Ages, the custom developed of allowing people who had moved away from where they grew up to come back to visit their home or 'mother' churches, and their mothers, on the fourth Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent.

“This became Mothering Sunday in Britain. As the dates of Lent vary each year, so does the date of Mothering Sunday.
“Although it's often called Mother's Day in the UK, it has no connection with the American Mother's Day.”
What is Lent?
Lent is something that is also celebrated every year around Easter time.
The BBC explains: “Lent is a period of 40 days during which many Christians remember the events leading up to and including the death of Jesus Christ, whose life and teachings are the foundation of Christianity.

“The 40-day period is called Lent after an old English word meaning 'lengthen'.
“This is because of the time of year when it happens, as this is when the days start to get longer, as we approach Summer.
“It is a time of reflection and of asking for forgiveness, and when Christians prepare to celebrate Jesus's resurrection at the feast of Easter, which comes at the very end of Lent.”
