A beloved Emmerdale actor has issued an urgent warning to fans of the ITV soap after undergoing surgery to have cancerous cells removed.

Liam Fox, who plays Dan Spencer in the popular programme, took to social media to share a picture of his bandaged head after the procedure.

He revealed that he had a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) removed, a very common form of skin cancer that can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun and sunbeds.

He went on to praise the "superb fun friendly" plastic surgery team at St Helen's Hospital.

He followed up this post with another selfie without the bandage, telling Emmerdale fans: "Another reminder to cover up…I’ve been using plenty of sun screen for decades, this could likely be damage from my teens when I didn’t think about the dangers."

He added: "At least I’m perfect for gangster castings now!"

According to the Metro, followers of the ITV actor were quick to send well-wishes with one fan writing: "Wishing you a speedy recovery, Liam. I hope it’s all sorted for you matey."

Other users said: "Sending hugs pal" and "Take care, mate".

In a reply to another fan, Liam said: "I had to keep pushing for a long time to be heard mate… fobbed off for ages."
