Jobs around the house easily mount up if you’re not on top of your game and one I don’t do too often is clean the oven.
In my house, it’s become one of the lesser-used appliances since the air fryer gets all the glory these days.
But occasionally it’s used for pizzas and garlic bread so it does still need a clean.
Cleaning an oven can be a big task that takes time and some elbow grease so it’s easy to think ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ rather than just get on with it, so when I saw an oven cleaning hack that looked simple and effective, I knew I had to try it.

TikTok oven cleaning hack that costs 30p
Using only a lemon that I bought for 30p in Morrisons and an oven-proof dish with some cold water, the cleaning hack was easy to set up.
TikTok user @jessicamay_home shared the hack to help others clean their oven and I’m glad the tutorial was an easy one to follow.
What you need:
- 1 lemon (sliced)
- 1 ½ cups of cold water
- 1 oven-proof dish
To clean the oven, you’ll need to slice a lemon and place it into an oven-proof dish.
Put 1 ½ cups of cold water in with it and put it in your oven for 20 minutes at 220C.
Once the time is up, take the dish out of the oven and let the water cool a bit. Then remove the lemon slices from the dish.
Grab a cloth and dampen it with the warm lemon water. Start wiping the bottom of the inside of the oven, the walls, racks and the door.
You should start to see that the lemon water removes the grime from your oven and leaves it looking clean.
Did the lemon and water oven hack work?
When I was preparing the cleaning hack, I thought it was really simple to do and would be a huge bonus if it worked wonders on my oven.
However, after trying the hack, I realised it’s probably not the best for tough stains and instead could be used in between deep cleans of my oven.
At the time of trying this hack, my oven was in need of a deeper clean and this hack didn’t quite clean it how I’d hoped.

The lemon water did remove a good amount of dirt from my oven but I found it wasn’t really strong enough to get rid of the tougher stains.
I think for those more stubborn stains, I’d prefer to use a cleaning product but I'd be open to trying the lemon water hack again once the oven needs freshening up rather than a deep clean.
That being said, I look forward to trying more household hacks to hopefully make the mundane chores a bit easier and quicker.
