A ST Denys teenager made a dream debut on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour.
Liam Day stepped up from the Saturday morning junior leagues at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club to compete in his first regional competition.
The Bronze Tour stopped off at Day’s home club for the fifth leg of eight.
And the 14-year-old upset the form book by winning all six of his round-robin group matches.
He beat Spike Hull (Landford), Keiran Murray (Eastleigh), Matthew Boudier (Gosport), Bradley Redmond (Millbrook), Corey Tallentire (Westbury) and Callum McDonald (Salisbury).
A quarter-final defeat by Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) ended the astonishing run.
There was a record 28 entries, split into four seven-man groups, for the Bronze Tour event and the second-best overall turnout of 49 across all three tournaments.
The draw was made at 10.30am. The Silver Tour final, the last match to finish, ended at 9.20pm.
Yes, it was a long day. Yes, there was much waiting around. But it’s all character building. Regional and national tournaments often involve long breaks. Not like the roll-on-roll-off format of the Saturday morning leagues.
It leaves time for actually talking to other players and recounting war stories - as well as picking up tips from watching the Silver and Gold Tour lads.
Four other Chandler’s Ford SC juniors made Cuestars debuts but missed out on a knockout spot. Keiran Murray (Eastleigh) won four out of six, Bradley Redmond (Millbrook) and Liam’s brother Luke picked up two wins apiece and Dan Sykes (Chandler’s Ford) recorded one victory before collecting a trophy for reaching the Plate final.
