A Hampshire MP has stepped up his campaign against plans to build huge warehouses on a greenfield site near the M27.

Wates Group is preparing to submit an application to redevelop more than 11 acres of farmland next to the Windhover Roundabout at Bursledon.

Wates says the scheme could create more than 750 jobs and give the area an economic boost totalling more than £500m.

But the proposed development has come under fire from Paul Holmes, Conservative MP for Hamble Valley.

Mr Holmes fears the scheme will overload the local road network as well as eroding the "vital" strategic gap separating Southampton and Bursledon.

The MP has sent a hard-hitting letter to Wates and is vowing to submit an objection when Eastleigh Borough Council receives the company's application.

His letter says: "My particular concern is that the Windhover Roundabout is already a very busy junction and adding additional vehicle movements will only make this problem worse, both in terms of adding traffic congestion and exacerbating air and noise pollution.

"The road infrastructure in the area cannot support this considerable increase in the level of use that will come from the two-year construction period and the industrial use once the site is completed, particularly when taken in addition to other development in the immediate vicinity.

"The land in question also forms part of the vital strategic gap between Bursledon and Southampton, preventing the merging of the two and maintaining their separate identity.

"Building warehouses will not only encroach upon that gap but also upon what is currently open space, adversely affecting the local environment.

"While I appreciate your intention to provide jobs locally, this site is simply not suitable for industrial use."

A Wates spokesperson said: "Eastleigh Borough Council's Local Plan highlights the requirement for new areas of employment land that can support business needs in the area.

"We firmly believe our site has the potential to help meet that need and support the borough's long-term prosperity.

"We are committed to engaging in a thorough and meaningful way with both the local community and the council so we can respond to any feedback or concerns."
