A queue of hungry fast-food seekers has grown outside Wendy's in Southampton as the outlet hands out freebies on opening day.

Dozens of people have been at the American chain diner in Above Bar Street - above popular Chinese restaurant Shanghai Bay - this lunchtime in the sun.

Among them was Jules Matuszewska who travelled from Eastleigh.

"I heard Wendy's was opening today and I've been told from people who have been to the restaurant in Portsmouth that it's amazing and the food is really good and they have drinks that are a bit like slushies", said Jules.

"I'm not a fan of McDonald's and I thought this would be a bit different and the quality of food would be to a high standard as it's fresh.

"So, I can't wait to get inside and try it out and hopefully get my hands on a freebie."

"I've previously been to the Wendy's in Reading and really liked it. I think it's good to have a different option to the likes of McDonald's, KFC, and Burger King.

"I think Wendy's tastes that bit better, it's great to have one in Southampton - great for me but not great for the waist line."

Staff at Wendy's handed out 50 free burgers to the first customers when doors opened at 11am - with some 60-70 people queuing up.

Sophie Hunter, district manager, told the Echo: "It's been incredible to see so many people here for our opening.

"When we came outside and saw people queueing along Above Bar Street we couldn't believe it and it's been a fantastic start to the day.

"None of this would have been possible without our brilliant team who have made today possible and we just hope the rest of the day will continue like this."
