MPs voted to approve the government’s revised reforms to the welfare system tonight – with Southampton MPs among those in favour.
Labour’s hugely controversial welfare bill has passed its first Commons hurdle after weeks of deliberations.
The universal credit and personal independence payment bill passed it second reading by 75 votes – 335 to 260.
It comes after a series of changes were made by the government last week to try and mollify backbench critics, including Southampton Itchen MP Darren Paffey who signed a reasoned amendment aimed at taking the bill down.
He said he was concerned about changes to personal independence payments.
