A project that helps over-60s live independently will get a boost from South Western Railway (SWR).

Senior Saints, an initiative of the Saints Foundation, aims to improve the lifestyle and independence of older adults through exercise and social activities.

After a successful partnership last year, SWR has pledged a £60,000 boost for the project.

This follows last year’s £17,000 funding as part of SWR's ‘Try the Train’ scheme.

Paul Hedges, Saints Foundation’s health project manager, said: "We have built a strong relationship with South Western Railway that continues to support those at need in the heart of our communities.

"The support given last season allowed us to provide some genuine life changing opportunities for our participants, we will now be able to provide more of these chances to more people."

Senior Saints engaged with 474 older adults in the 2023/24 season, with 82 per cent achieving a positive outcome.

The project's impact was so significant that each £1 spent could generate £6.42 in social value, according to Saints Foundation’s 'Our Impact 2025'.

Based on this figure, the £60,000 SWR investment could yield up to £385,000 in social value for Southampton.

Peter Williams, South Western Railway’s customer and commercial director, said: "Following a successful first season, we’re strengthening our ‘Try the Train’ partnership with Saints Foundation this year, continuing our focus on their Senior Saints.

"By increasing our investment in this fantastic initiative, we’re supporting older people in the Southampton area to travel with confidence, maintain their independence, and improve both their mental and physical wellbeing."

The generated social value factors in the community impact and reduced strain on public services, including the NHS.

The Saints Foundation, the charitable arm of Southampton Football Club, supports Southampton by delivering life-changing opportunities across various sectors, including health, education, and gender equality.

The foundation's projects aim to level the playing field by understanding and responding to the city's evolving needs.
