Southampton City Council has said alterations to speed limits in Shirley is a result of “engagement with local people.”

Hill Lane, Romsey Road, Shirley Road, and Paynes Road are all set to revert from 20mph to 30mph next month.

It comes after speed restrictions were implemented on the roads in 2022, before outgoing leader of the council, Lorna Fielker, announced plans to U-turn on the decision prior to the local elections in May 2024.

The council’s U-turn received criticism from opposition councillor, Jeremy Moulton, who acknowledged the “step forward is common sense,” but it’s “more money wasted by the Labour council.”

Cllr Eamonn KeoghCllr Eamonn Keogh (Image: Cristiano Magaglio) Cllr Eamonn Keogh, cabinet member for environment and transport, said changes would be made to the signage on the affected roads over the first two weeks of July, following positive engagement with residents.

He said: “The changes to the speed limit on specific roads in Shirley have come forward following engagement with local people through the formal Traffic Regulation Order process.

“Our highways partner, Balfour Beatty Living Places, will be making changes to the signage in these locations from Wednesday, July 2, to Tuesday, July 15, and we would ask drivers to continue to follow all legal road signage as these works progress.”
