An “inspirational” Itchen College teacher has posthumously been inducted a hall of fame.

Glenn Colmer was honoured outside the newly-named Colmer Building at Itchen College on Tuesday afternoon.

The popular teacher died in February at the age of 51 a short time after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Just four months on, his 20-years of service to Itchen College was honoured in a special ceremony, where he was inducted into the Association of Colleges Sport Hall of Fame, where his son Joe, a student at Itchen College, was presented with an award.

Speaking at the event, Lucy Callingham, a representative from AOC Sport, paid tribute to Glenn, stating he was the “driving force” behind Itchen College’s Academy of Sport.

She said: “This award is truly special, it’s not something that’s given out every year.

“I’m really honoured to induct Glenn into the AOC Sport Hall of Fame.

"Glenn was the driving force behind the Academy of Sport at Itchen College, where his passion and determination significantly advanced sport and physical activity.

“Over his 20-year period, Glenn fostered a period of participation in men’s and women’s sports, helping athletes to realise their potential.

“His dedication to women’s football especially, led to two AOC cup final titles.

“Glenn’s influence extended to more than just football, he also played a crucial role in developing both the basketball and volleyball programmes.

“Glenn was highly respected, both within the Hampshire community and the wider AOC Sport. Glenn’s impact on sports at Itchen will leave a lasting impact and legacy.”

James Bedwell, a colleague of Glenn’s for 10 years, remarked that Glenn was a “true friend,” and a “massive inspiration” to both staff and students.

He said: “I think it’s a testament to Glenn that everyone has taken time to be here today.

“Glenn had a massive impact not just on students but also on us as staff.

“We’re very fortunate to have spent time with Glenn, he was a true friend to all of us within the department.

“He’s been a massive inspiration to students over the last 20 years, we’ve spent some really good years with Glenn – national finals, trips, staff socials – you name it, Glenn was the reason why everyone was there and the reason why we’ve been so successful.”
