An Eastleigh MP has urged the Government to rethink proposed cuts to the disability benefits system.

Liberal Democrat MP, Liz Jarvis, wrote to Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Minister for Work and Pensions Liz Kendall regarding the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill.

She expressed concern about a lack of formal consultation with disabled people on the bill's provisions.

Ms Jarvis said: "Reforming of the disability benefits system is necessary but restricting eligibility and reducing benefit levels will not support people into work or improve the lives of people already struggling.

"On the contrary, it risks pushing those who already face the most significant challenges further into poverty."

The MP also highlighted the fear among her constituents over the proposed changes.

She acknowledged the rising welfare bill but cautioned against cutting support for the most vulnerable amidst struggling public services.

She said this would only worsen the situation for many people.
