A hospice leader says assisted dying should never replace end-of-life care.
Nigel Hartley, chief executive of the Mountbatten Group, which runs hospices in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, spoke after MPs backed the Terminally Ill Adults Bill by 314 votes to 291 on June 20.
It is also known as the Assisted Dying Bill.
The bill now goes to the House of Lords for further consideration.
Nigel said: "The vote to pass the Terminally Ill Adults [end-of-life] Bill is a huge step for our society.
"Assisted dying will never be an alternative to hospice and specialist palliative care.
"If assisted dying is legalised, it will be a choice for some alongside expert and compassionate end-of-life care services, which remain a basic human right."
He also stressed the need for better funding for hospices.
Nigel added: "The government needs to commit to better funding for hospices."
