The Health Secretary has announced a rapid national investigation into maternity services.

The inquiry follows calls from Eastleigh MP Liz Jarvis, who last week wrote to Health Secretary Wes Streeting to request a review into preventable maternity deaths.

Ms Jarvis highlighted the case of Charlotte and James Bassett from Eastleigh, whose baby daughter Norah died in April 2019 at Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

Despite being given the all-clear by a doctor, Norah deteriorated and was not transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit, despite low oxygen saturation readings.

Ms Jarvis said: "Today's announcement by the Health Secretary starts the process of giving long overdue answers to impacted families.

"We now need to see real action from the Government to keep mothers and babies safe.

"Every woman should have the right to the highest standards of safety, professionalism, care, and respect."

The Bassett family is being supported by the Maternity Safety Alliance.
