Two boys, 10 and 12, have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a blaze that destroyed four garages.

Six fire crews were called to the property on Hambrook Road in Gosport to report a 12-foot tree on fire yesterday shortly before 6pm.

The fire spread to and destroyed four garages, and also damaged the backs of five other properties.

Police say that no one was hurt.

Now, two boys have been arrested on suspicion of causing the blaze, intending to endanger life.

They remain in custody at this time.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called just after 6.15pm on Thursday, June 19, to reports of a large fire behind properties on Hambrook Road in the Forton area of Gosport.

"The incident was dealt with by Hampshire & IOW Fire and Rescue Service, and damage was caused to four flats by the fire.

"We’re now carrying out an arson investigation, and as part of our enquiries, two boys aged 12 and 10 have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life."

A spokesperson for the Hampshire & IOW Fire and Rescue Service added: "Yesterday evening at 5.53pm firefighters were called to a house on Hambrook Road, Gosport, after reports of a 12-foot tree on fire.
 
"Crews from Havant, Cosham, Fareham, Portchester, Southsea and Gosport responded to the property where the fire had spread to four garages, which have been 100 per cent damaged by fire.

"The fire also damaged the back of five properties. 

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, used three jets, one hose reel to put out the fire and positive pressure ventilation fans to clear the smoke."

"Our fire investigation team are working with Hampshire Constabulary in relation to this incident."

The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be in the area today, and those with concerns can speak to them.
