The experiences of young Black men in Britain are being brought to life through powerful new short films.

Pharrell Woon and Rashaan Hersi, both final year students at Solent University in Southampton, have used their final major projects to explore themes of identity, racism, and social injustice through film.

Their work shines a spotlight on the challenges and stories of young Black men in the UK, offering audiences a personal and thought-provoking perspective.

Pharrell, who studied BA (Hons) Film Production, created The Blacker the Berry, a coming-of-age drama set in Brixton in 1997.

Pharrell said: "The film stems from genuine events experienced by members of my family, as well as other notable Black stories that transpired during the 1990s, such as the case of Stephen Lawrence.

"My intention was to create a film that focused on a sense of realism, through the use of compelling acting and visually stunning imagery."

He credited Solent University with helping him develop both his skills and confidence as a filmmaker.

He said: "Everything I’ve learnt about being a filmmaker, I learnt at Solent.

"The university’s holistic approach transformed me into a filmmaker."

Rashaan Hersi, a Film and Television student, drew on his own personal journey to create Whitewashed, a short film about a young Caribbean-British man named Jamari who struggles to embrace his identity.

He said: "I drew inspiration for this project from my own life and struggles with identity.

"I believe it to be important to share stories like this, to give a voice to those who feel overlooked in situations like this, and to show them that they aren’t alone in their struggle."

Both filmmakers are set to graduate from Solent University on July 9, and plan to continue working in the creative industries, exploring directing, photography, and fashion.
