Redbridge Roundabout remains closed as recovery efforts are being co-ordinated to remove the lorry.
Delays are slowly easing on the M271. Google Maps now reports 20 minutes worth of queues.
Another Redbridge resident said he could also hear the crash from his house and cycled down on his bike to have a look.
He said: "I do wonder if there might have been an issue with how they stack the weight in the back of the lorry.
"This is also the first big roundabout a lot of these lorries hit after the docks.
"I think it’s really lucky that another car wasn’t crushed by the weight of the lorry falling down. It’s such a busy roundabout it could’ve easily resulted in an absolute disaster."
Speaking on traffic issues, Councillor David Harrison said on social media: "Yet another occasion where the local road structure is severely impacted.
"And for the Waterside, still no Hythe ferry or Waterside railway passenger service, which would at least provide options."
Delays of up to 30 minutes on M271
Drivers heading southbound on the M271 are facing delays of up to 30 minutes, according to Google Maps' traffic view.

'Please avoid the area'
A spokesperson for Totton Fire Station said on social media: "Driver is in the care of SCAS, and crews are making the scene safe. Please avoid the area and find alternative routes, we will try to update you when the road is clear."
Drivers are facing delays of 22 minutes on the M271 southbound due to closures from the lorry overturning.
The lorry is now being assessed by workers from Ravenscroft Motors.

More Ravenscroft Motors vehicles have arrived, taking the total up to three now, suggesting there may be efforts to recover the vehicle shortly.

Traffic coming into Southampton from the New Forest on the Totton Bypass is moving steadily, according to our reporter on the scene.
One resident who lives nearby to the roundabout said he could hear a huge crash from his home.
He said: "We heard this almighty bang and straight away. I knew a large vehicle had probably flipped over around the roundabout.
"With this being one of the busiest roundabouts in the city, it’s definitely going to cause some traffic chaos for the next few hours."

Queues are stretching back past Nursling Interchange.

Hampshire fire issue statement
A spokesperson for Hampshire fire confirmed that a HGV carrying refrigerated goods has overturned on its side.
The stop message has already been issued but fire crews remain on the scene for safety.
The spokesperson said: "At 13:10 this afternoon crews were called to an incident on Redbridge roundabout where a heavy goods vehicle carrying refrigerated goods had overturned on its side. The driver is in the care of the South Central Ambulance Service.
"Crews from Redbridge, Totton and St Mary's attended the scene. The service stop message was at 13:42 but two crews remain at the scene for scene safety."

Officers from Southampton City Council and Balfour Beatty are also at the scene.
Ravenscroft Motors are understood to be performing the recovery.

Full details of diversion after lorry crashes on its side on Redbridge Causeway
Southampton City Council has confirmed via Bluesky the diversion route that has now been put in place.
A spokesperson for the council said: "There is no access to the M271 via Redbridge Road off slip (westbound).
"Traffic exiting onto Redbridge Roundabout via the M271 Southbound is now being diverted inbound towards Millbrook roundabout and then back onto Redbridge Road (Westbound)."
Diversion on M271 south
Hampshire police have confirmed to the Echo that Redbridge Causeway is now closed, and that a diversion has been put in place on the M271 south into the city.

A spokesperson for Hampshire police told the Echo that they were called at 1.04pm to reports of a single vehicle crash on Redbridge Causeway, involving a lorry.
A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers are currently on scene.
"To enable us to deal with this incident, a road closure has been put in place. We would ask people avoid the area at this time."
The Echo understands that the driver has been rescued from the cab of the lorry and is being assessed by ambulance services, but there is no further update on their injuries yet.

Traffic is now queuing as far back as Snows on the A33, Google Maps reports.
Google Maps currently reports a delay of 6 minutes, though this number is understood to be increasing.
AA Traffic Map shows surrounding roads in red, suggesting that traffic is either slow moving or not moving at all following the lorry overturning.
