Fair Oak residents are set to receive major improvements to walking and cycling provisions after concerns were raised about traffic.

The county council is ready to approve a number of improvements in Fair Oak Road, Mortimers Lane, and Eastleigh Road.

At a full council in February, residents of Mortimers Lane urged Hampshire County Council to introduce restrictions and measures along the lane to control lorry movements and speed limits due to the impact on residents’ lives and safety.

They said that over the last seven years, the road near Eastleigh has become busier, causing their houses to shake due to the vibrations from high-speed cars and lorries.

Cabinet member for highways, Cllr Lulu Bowerman, said that the concerns would be reviewed and schemes scheduled to improve walking and cycling were awaiting approval.

Next week (June 23), the green light could be given for these improvements but the council has also indicated that, as planned, it will focus on improving walking and cycling along Fair Oak Road, Mortimers Lane, and Eastleigh Road.

The £3.4 million works will include the provision of a shared-use path on the southern footway of Mortimer’s Lane between Knowle Lane and the junction of Fair Oak Court.

The improvement of side road crossings over several junctions along Mortimers Lane to continuous footways at Bradshaw Close, Scotland Close, Michaels Way, Rustan Close, Willow Grove and Mortimers Drive is proposed.

Improved crossing points from north to south across Mortimers Lane at the junctions of Pembers Hill Farm, Mimosa Drive, Camelia Grove, Pembers Close, Willow Grove and Goaters Way are also planned.

The proposal also included two new bus stops on Mortimers Lane and improved signage reinforcing the existing speed limits, the upgrades to the existing pedestrian crossing to a Toucan crossing and the signal technology across the B3354 adjacent to St Thomas’ Church and upgrades to the existing footways.

If approved, work is expected to start in September 2025, with an estimated completion date in Spring 2027.
