A new contract is set to boost the railway industry.

Fareham-based Barnbrook Systems has secured a six-figure deal for its award-winning brake controllers, with the exact value of the contract not disclosed.

The order covers the maintenance of more than 100 units previously supplied for trains operating across the UK.

Andrew Barnett, managing director at Barnbrook Systems, said: "Safety on the railways is absolutely critical.

The refurbished brake controllers will be used on Class 15x trains.

Andrew said: "Our first order for the brake controller was more than a decade ago when we re-engineered an original model which was out of service and no longer commercially available.

"We created a new and improved unit which was compatible with older trains.

"This has allowed train operating and rolling stock leasing companies to extend the lifespan of assets, combat obsolescence and ensure greater business continuity with benefits for passengers, communities and economies they serve.

"We continue to upgrade the brake controller and deliver scheduled maintenance programmes to ensure optimum performance."

The brake controller features Barnbrook’s BlueCube remote sensing technology, which provides real-time performance data and supports predictive maintenance.

The company designs and manufactures engineered systems for legacy assets in the rail, aerospace, defence, maritime, fire safety, and commercial sectors.

Its products include directional switches for trains and controls for aircraft such as the Tornado, Jaguar, Hawk, and Sea Harrier.

Other innovations include a sensing switch for in-flight helicopter refuelling and the E:BAG lithium-ion battery fire suppression system, developed in partnership with Flair.

Barnbrook Systems has received multiple awards, including National Passenger Safety at the UK Rail Industry Awards, Supplier of the Year at the Light Rail Industry Awards, and Innovation of the Year at the Solent Business Awards.

The company was also named Best Use of Technology at the South Coast Business Awards and Manufacturing and Engineering Business of the Year at the Portsmouth News Business Excellence Awards.

Founded in 1978, Barnbrook Systems is an independent, family-owned business based on Fareham Park Road in Hampshire.
