A school in Netley has issued a stark warning to parents and carers after an unknown man tried to pick up a 12-year-old student in his car.

Hampshire police confirmed that they had received a report that the girl had been approached on Sellwood Road in Netley by an "unknown man" who then offered her a lift.

The incident had taken place around 3.30pm on Thursday.

The Hamble School has since sent a letter to parents and carers, warning them to be aware of suspicious activity.

The letter said: "We would like to take this opportunity to ask you to remind your child of the importance of being vigilant of suspicious activity and to not accept lifts from people they do not know. As always, we would encourage your child to walk to and from school in pairs/ groups.

"If you or your child notice any suspicious activity, please report it to the Police on 999. Please also report anything unusual to the school."

Hampshire police confirmed detectives will be "carrying out extensive enquiries" to investigate and that officers will continue to "complete patrols in the area concerned over the coming days".

"Anyone with information about the incident should call 101 and quote incident number 44250258285," a spokesperson for the force said.
