Southampton City Council has confirmed that it is "working with partners" to move travellers off a popular dog-walking field that sits between houses in Millbrook.

Just after 8.15pm last night, six caravans arrived a field that borders Kendal Avenue between Mansel Park and Green Park, opposite Millbrook Christian Centre on Wimpson Lane.

While residents noted the presence of travellers last night, Southampton City Council launched initial processes today, completing statutory welfare checks with the occupants of the "unauthorised encampment".

A spokesperson for the local authority has now confirmed that it is "working with partners" to vacate the site.

Councillor Lee Whitbread told the Echo that he is "aware" of the unauthorised encampment, which was set up last night.

The ward member for Redbridge said: "I understand that this is a concern for local residents, particularly those who regularly use the area for recreation and dog walking.

"I want to assure everyone that I am in contact with Southampton City Council officers and will ensure that the appropriate steps are taken in line with the legal process.

"The council must follow legal procedures to address unauthorised encampments, which involves applying to the courts for an order where appropriate.

"If anyone witnesses any instances of antisocial behaviour or criminal activity, I strongly urge you to report it directly to Hampshire Constabulary either via their website or by calling 101. This ensures that any immediate concerns are addressed appropriately and logged officially."
