A lane rental scheme could soon be introduced to reduce roadwork delays on some of Hampshire’s busiest roads.

Hampshire County Council will consider the proposal on June 23.

If approved, the scheme could take effect in spring 2026, covering more than 550 miles of key routes.

Councillor Kirsty North, cabinet lead for universal services at Hampshire County Council, said: "We’re exploring new ways to limit the impact of roadworks and disruption for residents.

"As the highway authority, we have a duty to manage disruption across the road network and keep Hampshire moving, whilst also coordinating essential work to maintain and upgrade our county’s infrastructure.

"In recent years, we have seen a sharp rise in the number of permit requests to undertake work on Hampshire’s roads."

The lane rental scheme would charge a daily fee for roadworks on selected routes, encouraging quicker completion and better planning to limit delays.

Similar schemes are already in place elsewhere in the UK.
