A Ringwood man is set to run 100 kilometres in one day for a local charity.

Jack Miller, 25, is taking on the challenge after his father, Ian, was diagnosed with incurable cancer.

He will begin his run from Lyndhurst at 4am on June 21, and hopes to finish at Poole Park by 4pm.

Ian, 51, who was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in March 2023, plans to join him for the last kilometre.

Together, they aim to raise £2,500 for the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF).

Jack said: "My dad’s cancer is sadly not going to go away but despite this he has maintained a hugely positive attitude throughout and is working every day to stay as fit as he can.

"It felt like a fundraising challenge was the least I could do while he is dealing with this enormous process and I love running, so I decided to use the longest day of the year to do something really ambitious."

Ian was given the all-clear in November, but in February he and his family learned his cancer had metastasised in his lungs.

Following three recent cycles of chemotherapy, he has learned his cancer has been reduced but remains incurable.

The furthest Jack has ever run is 27km, making this a significant challenge for him.

He said: "The farthest I have ever run is 27km, so this is well beyond my comfort zone.

"But I will also have family members joining me along the route, including my sister Milly, my uncle, and some of my cousins, and hopefully together we can encourage each other and raise a good amount of money for this great local charity."

Jack’s father Ian said he is: "incredibly proud" of his son, adding: "The last couple of years have been a rollercoaster for us all, but we are a very close family, and it has been great to see how many people have stepped forward to support him in this challenge."

Jack's run will coincide with The Longest Day event being organised by Poole-based gym wear company Runderwear.
