"Piotr, you will always remain in our hearts", are the words of a sister in tribute to her brother, who sadly died outside a church in Southampton.

Leszek Migdal, 52, most commonly called Piotr, was sadly found dead outside Freemantle United Reform Church, in Shirley, where he had been sleeping rough, on August 19, 2023.

His inquest, which ended on Monday, concluded that his death was the result of a subdermal hematoma, believed to have been the result of an accidental fall.

His sister, Monika Migdal, who lives in the UK and attended his inquest, says he was an "incredibly warm, cheerful, and sensitive person."

She said: "In difficult situations, he often showed composure and calm.

"He was also a very hardworking and well-organised man.

"Wanting to provide for the needs of his loved ones, he sought additional sources of income, trying to develop his own business in order to support his family with dignity.

"However, life’s twists and turns led Piotr to make the decision to leave the country in search of a better future."

About three weeks after Piotr's death, a then 46-year-old was arrested in connection with the death after confessing during an unrelated police interview.

A murder investigation was opened, but later dropped due to a lack of evidence and the man recanting his confession.

"In his life, Piotr first fell in love with punk-rock music," added Monika.

"It was his filter and transmitter for everything that resonated within him, shaped him, challenged him, and at the same time gave him strength and belief in the meaning and essence of existence and love.

"Together with his friends, he formed the band Strefa Zagrożenia (“Danger Zone”), which, in the chaos of life, became their musical window to freedom, through which they tried to find balance.

"Over time, he transferred this love and passion into his family, doing his best to create a normal, loving home."

During the inquest, the coroner heard that Piotr had made efforts to enter rehabilitation and wanted to reconnect with his children.

Monika added: "Time has shown us, however, that not every decision in our lives turns out to be the right one — and further unfortunate turns of fate led Piotr into a dark corner, which ultimately took from him the greatest gift of all: Life.

"Sadly, sometimes life’s tangled constellations rob us of everything that is dearest and closest to our hearts.

"Piotr loved his children deeply and will love them forever.

"Piotr, you will always remain in our hearts."
