The annual inheritance tax bill for South Hampshire is predicted to skyrocket to £180 million by 2027.

A report by Irwin Mitchell's Private Client Advisory team, based on an HMRC freedom of information request, indicates the number of estates in the SO postcode region subject to inheritance tax will exceed 650 by 2026/27.

This represents a 96 per cent increase from 2015/16.

The average inheritance tax bill per estate could hit £271,000.

The report indicates a broader national trend, predicting the UK's total inheritance tax bill will reach £9 billion by 2026/27.

Naomi Neville, partner in Irwin Mitchell Private Client Advisory team, said: "These figures show that families in the south of Hampshire are increasingly being caught by inheritance tax.

"With the threshold freeze extended until 2030, changes to business and agricultural property reliefs from April 2026, and pensions from April 2027, it's more important than ever to understand the implications and take proactive steps."
