Retirees are fearing or the future of their home after they were told to move out in less than a week.

Husband and wife Keith and Diane Jones were sailing to the west country on Tuesday when they were told they had five days to leave their flat in Ocean Village.

The couple, both 69, moved into an apartment in flat block Sirocco in Ocean Village in 2017.

But now the pair may have to spend some of their retirement living between hotels and temporary accommodation.

It comes after Barratt Redrow broke the news to residents of Sirocco and Mistral blocks of flats that fire safety risks identified in the luxury buildings means an evacuation is necessary.

This comes months after those living in Sundowner Court were told of the same issue.

Keith, a former engineer, described it as a “massive shock”.

“We have been told temporary accommodation will be provided, but the reality is we will not be returning for months, or even years”, he said.

“We are not wanting to live somewhere, in our retirement, without our possessions, wherever that may be.

“What are we going to do as nearly-70-year-olds, live in a hotel for five years?

“This is an issue that is going to take years, and I think it will be finished by 2030 if we are lucky.

“Being in this situation is really dire.”

He praised the previous involvement of Southampton Itchen MP Darren Paffey and said putting pressure on Barrett Redrow is necessary.

Keith said: “We are now sailing back home, and we have five days to move ourselves out before the doors are locked on June 22.

“This is a mess. We do not want to be put in temporary accommodation when we have no timeline.

“But how long is a piece of string?

“It is totally ludicrous and never should have occurred. It is destroying a community.”
