A hundred bikers are expected to rev their engines for "Dave's last ride" in honour of a "community pillar" who passed away after being given just three months to live, almost three years ago.

The motorcycle escort is part of the funeral service for veteran Dave 'Digger' Gardner, from Hedge End, and will take place on June 28.

He joined the Royal Artillery when he was 21 and served across the globe, including Canada, Iraq, Kuwait and Germany.

He was forced to retire after being stung by a scorpion caught in his boot in Canada, which resulted in both of his legs being amputated.

He died on May 16 at the age of 59.

Dave's friend Mark Bailey called him a "cornerstone of our community", adding: "He has touched a lot of people. We have bikers coming from across the country for the funeral.

"He lived with heart and gave everything he had to those around him."

After leaving the military, Dave would set up the CIC Tail End Charlie, working with a team of volunteers to support veterans and became a well-known figure in the veterans group Rolling Thunder CONEX.

In September 2022, Dave was rushed to the hospital after developing sepsis in his stumps. Despite further amputations, he was given just months to live.

At the time, a massive biker ride out was organised in support of Dave, with hundreds riding out in support.

Stunned by the support, Dave vowed to make the doctors who had given him months to live "eat their words".

Dave would fly past the doctor's estimates, exceeding them by three whole years, before passing away last month.

In that time, he helped set up the Eastleigh Veterans Centre, a resource that continues to go from "strength to strength".

"He was a very strong, determined person, added Mark.

"He is sort of a legend, everyone knows Digger.

"Whilst he was suffering from his own illness, he was always helping other people. Nothing was too much for him to help people.

"This ride is a symbol of our respect and our way of making sure he gets the kind of send-off he truly deserves."

The escort will begin at Lakeside Country Park at 11am and end at Wessexcale Crematorium.

Flags, vests, and respectful attire are encouraged. All local riders, veterans, clubs, and those who were touched by Dave's life are welcome.

A memorial service will follow at Wessexvale Crematorium, with family and close friends sharing stories and memories of Digger's incredible journey through life.
